DEGRADATION AND CONTROL PROCESSES

Degradation process:

Wind erosion.

Description:

Erosion caused by the action of the prevailing winds, which can detach particles from the soil surface (deflaction). This is important in dry areas with unconsolidated particles and without plant cover. The effect of the wind increases when it transports solid particles which produce important erosion on rocks and boulders (abrasion).

One spectacular case is the town of Empúries (Catalonia, Spain), which was a former Greek settlement on the Catalan coast. After it was abandoned, it remained buried under wind-borne sand for centuries.

Importance: areas with prevailing winds.
