SOIL MAP LEGEND
In order not to distance soil mapping from the potential users of soil information, it is important to take two specific aspects into account:
– the willingness to make maps drawn up at a detailed scale available to soil
information users. One scale which is relevant for both regional and
municipal planning is that of 1:25,000, which is the scale adopted
by the Departament d'Agricultura, Alimentació i Acció Rural (DAR)
of the Generalitat de Catalunya.
– the need to describe the map units with a structured and coherent legend,
which is simple, easy to understand, and readily adaptable to
local needs.
Detailed soil maps using soil series make it possible to:
– differentiate between parts of the soil cover of a landscape, taking into
account the requirements of soil information users;
– establish map legends by defining map units according to a minimum set
of characteristics related to soil functions
Soil classification, which also features in soil map legends, serves to facilitate dialogue among soil scientists, but this is not the objective of detailed soil maps.
